Post-hoc analysis of pooled data from 2 multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 6-month studies (n=844 and n=585) comparing NEXIUM 40 mg and NEXIUM 20 mg with placebo administered once daily in at-risk patients (ulcer-free, but aged ≥60 years and/or with a documented history of gastric or duodenal ulcer within the past 5 years) on continuous NSAID therapy.
To what extent can NEXIUM reduce the risk of gastric ulcer?
NEXIUM reduces the risk of gastric ulcer in patients with previous ulcer and/or aged ≥60 years on continuous NSAID therapy
Percent of patients with gastric ulcer with NEXIUM 40 mg, NEXIUM 20 mg, and placebo in individual studies were 5%, 5%, and 17%, respectively (n=795; P<.01), and 3%, 5%, and 12%, respectively (n=569; P<.01).

NEXIUM 40 mg QD and NEXIUM 20 mg QD are indicated for the reduction in the occurrence of gastric ulcers associated with continuous NSAID therapy in patients at risk for developing gastric ulcers. Patients are considered to be at risk due to their age (≥60 years) and/or documented history of gastric ulcers. Controlled studies do not extend beyond 6 months.
